The children have now grown up and are gradually leaving home, so what was happening in the 1891 census?
1891 census at 14, Sidney Street, Cowley, Oxfordshire. At long last, we now have a house number for where George and Harriett were living in Sidney Street. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find out if they stayed in the same house, or moved around from one house to another, during the twenty odd years they've been in Sidney Street!
An excerpt from the transcript of the 1891 census.
George Jeffery 59 Whitesmith. Harriet “ 58 Eva Jane “ 26 School Teacher. Charles H. ” 18 Printer and Photographer.
Now who do we have missing from the census. George and Harriett are still there, Eva Jane is still a school teacher, and living at home. Charles Henry (the “baby” of the family), has grown up and is a printer and photographer, also still living at home.
William and Alice G. are missing, but remember they both got married, William in 1882, and Alice G. in 1888, so they will both have their own households, at different addresses. We can look for them seperately in the 1891 census.
The other person not shown is Emily Julia, 22. Looking on the BMD site, there is no sign of a marriage for her. Looking on the 1891 census records, we find an Emily J. Jeffery, working as a housemaid in Streatham, London. Another daughter in service!
Now for William and Alice G. (remember Alice G. will be using her married name, Doman, from now on). Let's find William first:-
1891 census at 16, Sidney Street, Cowley, Oxfordshire. We have William, Lucy, and new family (they now have four young children), living next door but one, to his parents, George and Harriett (there is number 15 in between). William is now a fully qualified fireman and gasfitter.
An excerpt from the transcript of the 1891 census.
William Jeffery 31 Fireman/Gasfitter. Lucy “ 28 William G. “ 7 Born DecQ. 1883 in Headington. William George. Henry C. “ 6 Born MarQ. 1885 in “ Henry Charles. Walter E. “ 2 Born JunQ. 1889 in “ Walter Edward. Alfred C “ 4mths. Born MarQ. 1891 in “ Alfred Cecil.
Now let's find Alice Gertrude Doman (nee Jeffery).
1891 census at 95, Percy Street, Cowley, Oxfordshire. Percy Street is just along the road from Sidney Street, so Alice G. is still very close to “home”. Edward T. and Alice G. now have two young children. Edward T. is a groom, working locally.
An excerpt from the transcript of the 1891 census.
Edward T. Doman 29 Groom. Alice G. “ 29 Edward T. “ 1 Born SepQ. 1889 in Headington. Edward Thomas. Alice G. “ 3mths. Born MarQ. 1891 in Headington. Alice Gertrude.
As you can see, they have named their first two children after themselves. This was quite a common thing to do in those days. William and Lucy named their first son William, plus George, after William's father. Their second son they named Henry Charles, after William's young brother, but swapping the names around - Charles Henry – Henry Charles!
Now let's see how everybody was getting on in 1901 – The New Century!
